Dogs are known for their loyalty and protective instincts, and it’s not uncommon for them to adopt orphaned animals, including kittens.
In this case, it seems like the dog saw the tiny kitten alone in the pouring rain and took it upon itself to rescue and care for the kitten. Dogs have a strong sense of smell, and it’s possible that the dog could smell the kitten’s distress or hear its cries.
Once the dog brought the kitten home, it likely continued to care for it, providing warmth, comfort, and possibly even nursing it. This behavior is not uncommon among dogs, who have been known to act as surrogate mothers to animals of other species, including kittens, puppies, and even baby goats or pigs.
Many people believe that dogs and cats are born to dislike one another, but the truth may be very different. In reality, they can get along swimmingly, and their connection can be genuine and loving, just like any other friendship. They might be each other’s guardian angels as well as pals.
Meet Hazel, a loving dog who rescued a tiny stray kitten by coaxing it into following her home during pouring rain. Monica Burks couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw her dog, Hazel, helping out the squeaking kitten during the heavy downpour.
Monica, 48, peered outdoors after Hazel, 3, did not come back from her “restroom” break and instead kept drawing attention to a faint cry underneath their shed.
Each time the kitten stopped, Hazel – a mixture between a Yorkie, Chihuahua and poodle – encouraged her along and waited for her. And when the kitten couldn’t make it up the step into the warm, dry home, Hazel even picked it up in her mouth and carried the cat inside.
Monica took care of the cat despite her astonishment. She has named the kitten Sheba. Hazel’s brave gesture touched her heart as well.
Monica’s brother, Michael, was later given the kitten. Sheba fit right in with her new family, and Hazel and Sheba will undoubtedly have lots of opportunities to have fun together in the future!
Hazel persisted, staying out in the rain until Monica, from Abilene, Texas, was met by a surprise: her dog trotting down the driveway, the squealing kitten in tow.
